Sandman, the
   An imaginary figure who sprinkles sand on your eyes to send you to sleep; if you can feel hard grains on your eyelashes in the morning, you know the Sandman came last night. It is not clear how long this has been part of nursery lore, or where it came from. 'Dustman' with the same meaning is found in 1821, and there was a Lancashire figure called Billy-Winker, 'a mythical sprite that closes the eyes of children at bedtime' (Wright, 1913: 202). However, the first record for 'Sandman' itself is in a translation of Hans *Anderson's tales in 1861 (OED), so a continental origin seems possible.
